Artists' impressions of Balik Pulau
GEORGE TOWN: WHEN one thinks of Balik Pulau, rolling
hills, pristine waters, quintessential villages, orchards, Penang laksa
and last but not least, home to the best durians in the country -- as
claimed by lovers of the fruit -- immediately springs to mind.
As development slowly creeps into Balik Pulau, at the southern tip of Penang island, its rustic beauty may soon be a thing of the past.
Playing its role to preserve its natural beauty for generations to come is the Balik Pulau Art Society (BPAS), which is holding its third exhibition entitled
Landscape: Frame of Mind -- Let Dreams Take Flight at the Penang State Art Gallery in Lebuh Light until tomorrow.
President of the BPAS Duola Lim Guat See said it took the society two years to organise the group exhibition at the PSAG for art lovers to view images of the town on canvas instead of travelling all the way to Balik Pulau.
"Balik Pulau is Penang's paradise and the artists want to capture its beauty in their artworks and share it with everyone.
"This coastal town is a haven for artists who love nature. Artists sketching and painting at different corners of the town are preserving its beauty through art," said Lim at the launch.
With a strong line up of over 40 artists and 85 artworks in a motley of mediums, the society is sending a strong message in support of this idyllic town where visitors have been known to come back again and again.
"We decided to hold this year's exhibition at the PSAG as it would be more convenient for art lovers come here rather then make the trip to Balik Pulau.
"Though famous for its seasonal fruits, especially the durian, and the local laksa, the artists also bring their creativity to the mix.
Lim added the society has hopes of turning Balik Pulau into an art village.
"The road is long but we will succeed because what drives us is our passion for art and our love for the town and its people who have given us their wholehearted support.
"It is a dream now but if we work together our dream could become a reality."
The PSAG is open from 9am to 5pm, except on Fridays and public holidays.
Admission is free.
State Assemblyman of Air Itam YB Wong Hon Wai officiated at the launch.
Also present were PSAG curator Haryany Mohamed, Museum and PSAG committee member Teh Ee Ming, and BPAS vice-chairman Koh Teng Huat.
